Program and Course Learning Objective Alignment

Program learning objectives (PLOs) and course learning objectives (CLOs) are the foundation on which all meaningful learning experiences are built. During your course development process, you should lay a solid foundation for your course by aligning program and course learning objectives.

This short video (1:23) provides quick suggestions for how to complete your alignment! We’ve also provided you with an AI prompt to get you started more quickly!

AI Prompt for PLO and CLO Alignment

Using a carefully crafted AI prompt and your PLOs and CLOs, you can get started with your CLO to PLO alignment more quickly! Although AI can make things faster and more efficient, it cannot replace your expertise. It’s important that you verify and modify any AI alignment suggestions before finalizing your alignment.

Pretend you are a faculty member who is developing an online course titled, “[COURSE TITLE]” which is offered in a [PROGRAM NAME] program. The [PROGRAM NAME] PLOs (defined as program level outcomes or program level objectives) are:

  1. [PLO 1]
  2. [PLO 2]
  3. [PLO 3]
  4. [PLO 4, etc.]

Your course’s CLOs (defined as course level outcomes or course level objectives) are:

  1. [CLO 1]
  2. [CLO 2]
  3. [CLO 3]
  4. [CLO 4, etc.]

In a table where each program learning outcome is the title of a column and each course learning outcome is the title of a row, recommend alignment. To recommend alignment, place an “x” in the cell where the course learning objective/outcome best supports the students’ completion of a program learning objective/outcome.

Restate the objectives as they are given and do not edit them in any way. You must indicate alignment within each row at least once but may indicate alignment to multiple PLOs if there is alignment present. Below the table, provide your justification for those alignment decision in a few brief bullet points.
