AI-Enhanced Student Support Toolkit

In the accelerated online learning environment, students face numerous challenges that can derail their educational journey. According to Risepoint’s 2024 Voice of the Online Learner, 22% of students step out in their first year due to one or more obstacle. Our online accelerated learners are primarily working adults with families who seek flexible, affordable, quality education to advance their careers. The top reasons students step out include:

  • Unforeseen life events (35%)
  • Work and school obligations (25%)
  • Financial burdens (23%)
  • Mental health challenges (20%)

As educators, we can implement strategic interventions that make a meaningful difference in student persistence, however, we need to be efficient with our time as well. This is when using AI as a task partner can save time and let us focus on the human connection that students require to thrive online.  Below we cover strategies to address persistence challenges, and the AI prompts to implement support strategies.

Working with AI

AI is a useful tool to help draft content, however, it is an algorithm and not a human replacement. AI is a companion tool, useful for brainstorming and drafting, however, you will always need to review and finalize the content. Adapt prompts to fit your needs and the structure of your course, the more detail you provide, the better the output will be.

Data Privacy and AI Tools

Some of these prompts require course data to complete. Before providing any AI tool with university or personal information, familiarize yourself with your institution’s AI policy. Use recommended institutional tools and do not share data with anyone or any platform you do not trust.

When life throws curveballs at your students, having a plan to give them grace can be the difference between persisting and stepping out. Create a structured yet compassionate approach to extensions. By providing clear guidelines and simple processes for extensions, you demonstrate both compassion and structure—a powerful combination that supports persistence without sacrificing academic integrity.

Prompt: Generate a comprehensive extension policy for my [COURSE NAME] that accommodates unexpected life circumstances, preserves academic integrity and aligns with institution and course policies in the syllabus, includes a straightforward procedure, specifies reasonable time frames for different assignment types, provides an extension request form, and outlines a clear communication protocol for extension requests.

Implementation Tip: Share your policy in an announcement at the beginning of the term and provide an easy-to-use extension request form. Update your LMS settings to accommodate these extensions without penalizing students.

For working adults, time management is often the greatest challenge, with 25% citing it as their reason for discontinuing their studies. Our online accelerated learners are primarily working adults with families who are juggling multiple responsibilities while pursuing education to advance their careers. By creating transparent time expectations and providing practical tools for managing workload, you help students make informed decisions about their capacity each week. This proactive approach to time management doesn’t just help students complete assignments—it empowers them to plan realistically, reduce stress, and maintain momentum throughout their educational journey, even during particularly demanding periods in their professional and personal lives. Prompt: Evaluate my [COURSE NAME] syllabus and generate a weekly time commitment breakdown that provides realistic estimates for completing readings and materials, outlines time needed for assignment completion, includes participation requirements and their time investment, organizes information by module/week, and presents data in a visual format students can use for planning their schedule.
  • Each chapter is roughly 30-40 pages with several new concepts, estimate 1.5-2 hours for each chapter.
  • Each article or webpage will take roughly 30-45 minutes.
  • Each lecture in the course is no more than 10 minutes.
  • Discussions require an initial post and 2 responses to peers, thought is required but not extensive research.
  • Quizzes require 1 hours of study time and 1 hour to take the quiz.
  • Assignment lengths vary.

Implementation Tip: Share this time allocation chart in one or more locations during the first week and reference it when introducing new assignments or modules. Adapt the time allotments in the prompt based on your course’s specific needs, and you can also create a downloadable weekly planning template students can customize.

With 23% of students stepping out due to financial concerns, addressing cost issues is crucial. Many students, particularly first-generation degree seekers, may not be aware of available resources or may encounter unexpected costs that strain already tight budgets. By conducting a thorough review of your course materials and requirements, you can identify and eliminate hidden expenses that might otherwise catch students by surprise.

Prompt: Conduct a comprehensive cost assessment of my [COURSE NAME] by identifying all required materials and their approximate prices, uncovering any unexpected or hidden expense, evaluating technology requirements and associated costs, recommending free or low-cost alternatives for expensive resources and creating a transparent cost overview I can share with my students.

Implementation Tip: Be sure to highlight financial aid deadlines and emergency funding options and consider adopting Open Educational Resources (OER). Clearly communicate all course-related expenses upfront.

Student feedback consistently highlights that engagement with instructors and peers is the most valuable part of their educational experience. This connection becomes even more crucial when addressing the 20% of students who step out due to mental health challenges. While you’re not expected to be a mental health coach, your regular, supportive communication creates a foundation of trust that encourages students to reach out when struggling.

Announcement Prompt: Create weekly announcements based on the course outline. Highlight the topic for that week and how it helps them become proficient in the subject and aligns with assessment when applicable. Outline workforce relevance and highlight deadlines. Recognize typical challenges students face at this point in the term and preview upcoming work with practical time management suggestions.  End each announcement with an encouraging statement about how their persistence and dedication is important to their success and remind them to reach out for support and resources.

Intervention Email Prompt: Create a supportive outreach message for a student who [SPECIFIC CONCERN]. Show genuine concern without creating alarm, present specific support resources and options, references the course’s flexibility policies, encourage response without adding pressure and maintain a supportive, non-judgmental approach.

Implementation Tip: You can also use AI to help schedule regular check-ins and announcements at key points in the term. Consider when and how often you’d like to post before drafting all the announcements.

Final Thoughts

Student feedback consistently highlights that engagement with you and their peers is the most valuable part of their educational experience. Your presence as an instructor remains one of the most powerful tools for student success. As one faculty member shared, “Being present for them is one of the best ways to help them succeed.”
